The Mural Man Phillip Martin Travels
to Westbury (Johannesburg), South Africa

The first of The Mural Man Series, featuring Mural #14, “Don’t Let Drugs Take You For A Ride!” in South Africa, was created by Phillip Martin with the help of more than thirty volunteers in Westbury Township of Johannesburg. From start to finish, it takes about a week to complete a mural this size. “It may look simple, but it usually takes an entire day to brainstorm with people and then come up with a finished design,” explained Phillip Martin.
Safe to Learn invites you to explore the world and share the adventures with Phillip Martin, educator, artist, adventurer and explorer. The Mural Man series can be shared with a Social Studies Class or anyone with a desire to explore the world in a more unique and personal way.
Imagine each page as an adventure! The reader is provided an opportunity to learn so much about Johannesburg as well as the rest of South Africa. The original graphic maps bring attention to not only the location but add additional information about the country. If you want to know why South Africa is called the Rainbow Nation, discover the name of one of the oldest mountains in the world, or find what a vuvuzela is – you will discover that and more in the chapter called “Fun Facts”.
Sample recipes that take you on a journey into the culture of a country and each community he visits. “The experiences I gather in my world travels are not the way most people I know travel. The recipes, and the stories that accompany them, may help the reader see the world in a whole new light,” explained Phillip Martin. In this first Mural Man, taste Dahl (Lentil Soup) and and enjoy Pooitjie (after you learn how to pronounce it).
Take the time to read “Puppy Love” and discover a wonderful Folk Tale that includes lessons learned about making proper choices and the importance of loyalty from an old rescued dog. Decide for yourself if the lessons are clear and the punishment is just. Phillip Martin also include links to “Activities” designed to enrich social studies, literature and art.
Think of it, Phillip's words and photography will take you around Capetown; on a boat to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for almost 27 years; among penguins nesting on Cape Point; through the Drakensberg Mountains and near whales off the coast of Hermanus. His South African travels capture some vanishing cultures at the Lesedi Village and Nyani Village and then journey on to Soweto Township’s poverty and opulence. Stories and images include wildlife at Kruger National Park and Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
