I'm going to start out with the truth and tell you that I don't cook much. I should have watched my mother more closely in the kitchen. I could have taken some cooking classes at some point in my life. Now days, I am sure there are videos on YouTube. I haven't done any of these. I have decided that there must be a cooking gene and I just don't have it. However, the lack of that gene hasn't stopped my interest in good recipes. And, as I have traveled the world, I've collected some of the dishes that have inspired me.
I've been traveling a while. Yes, a long while. Some of you may be just too young to remember life before digital cameras. Old folks will remember when you had to budget how many photos were left on your roll and think about the cost of developing film. Anyway, that is why some of my photos may be grainy and yellow. If you have never seen a grainy or yellow photo before, you are just so delightfully young. Enjoy it. But, I thought I should explain why some of my photos are better than others.
The smells and tastes in these recipes bring me back to people and places around the globe. Each dish is more than just food. There is a story that goes along with the recipe. So, not only is there a wonderful taste of the world to savor with each bite, there is an extra warmth in my heart. I hope you will enjoy a taste of my world.
Think of it, when friends gather to enjoy a meal you have prepared with my recipes, you can spice up the conversation by sharing stories about the unusual foods and why it was chosen for the cookbook. For example, when you prepare Chocolate, Pear and Yogurt Cake, you can share the story of a teacher who invited me to France -- where I ended up staying with her family -- learning this recipe from her son after painting a mural at her school.
The recipes included in Volume 1 of my cookbook series include:
Mom's Potato Salad from US; Joyce's Rice and Beans from Haiti; Gloria's Poblanos Chiles from Mexico; Estephanie's Llapingachos from Ecuado; Tom's Chocolate Pear and Yogurt Cake, from France; Coenie's Omelet from South Africa; Mariam's Carrot Cake from Manilia; Albert's Beans Gravy from Liberia; Glögi with Eileen from Finland; and Habiba's Harira from Morocco.
