Start a "Let's Talk" Round Table Discussion...

When I was growing up my parents had a white round table in the kitchen area. Something interesting happened when I sat down at that table. I didn't realize until years later that I had an equal voice in whatever was being discussed. When important family matters were talked about, our family sat at that kitchen table and each of us had the opportunity to share our thoughts or opinions. When we wanted to debate issues, we also sat at that table and often talked for hours. I somehow found a way to move that white table around with me for years until we moved to Washington in 1999.
Looking back, I know now that my mom must have been a very wise woman because she knew it was important that there are times when families, circles of friends, business colleagues, students, as well as principals, assistant principals, teachers, facility managers and/or support staff needed to come together and have an equal voice.
I can close my eyes and hear her words, "Listen and remember that each person's opinions are just as important as the others sitting at our table. And please remember that sometimes you simply need to listen."
If you haven't already, I invite you to start a "Let's Talk" round table discussion. If you do not have a round table, any gathering place will work and any type of table. If you aren't sure what to talk about, ask everyone at the table to write a topic on a small piece of paper and put all the ideas into a jar. Take turns selecting an idea from the jar and begin a discussion. As a group, decide the amount of time to talk about each topic and allow time for to everyone talk (if they want to).
In the Safe to Learn, "Let's Talk" links directory we have included books, resources and an assortment of topics that could easily be the focus for a "Let's Talk" round table discussion.
