Ask yourself, “Is there anything I do today to make a child, teacher, principal, classroom, school, district or community just a little safer?”
Principals, assistant principals and teachers devote their lives to not only teaching our children, but also to doing their best to ensure that our schools are safe and secure learning environments. Each month, and sometimes more than once a month, teachers, staff and students participate in fire drills and lock down drills so that they can build teams and trust among students, teachers and staff. These drills provide time to practice and also time to talk about preparing for emergencies with students and staff.
If their legs and minds are both moving it empowers critical thinking by considering safety whether at school, home or in society (community).
Today, the most important actions we can take are to show our children and students that they are safe and loved.
All schools can do this by taking the necessary time to listen to their students if they say they are afraid, sad or angry and discover healthy ways to help them express their feelings. It is also important to trust your own feelings if you believe that a student, staff member or even a parent truly needs help.
Sometime there just isn't enough time to do it all or learn it all. The Safe to Learn Project was developed based upon many of the lessons learned and information shared by Ada Rosario Dolch in Principles for Principals - Leading the Way to School Safety. Ada Rosario Dolch makes it clear that safety planning needs to a part of each day. She also understood that you can learn so much by simply learning a little at a time - over time.
A special thanks to the small group of educators and subject matter experts who have be working together together since 2010 to enhance and reinforce information that has built a strong foundation for a sustainable school safety program in a small rural school district in Texas. .
